Corallorhiza maculata var. occidentalis fma. intermedia

The Western Spotted Coralroot, Corallorhiza maculata var. occidentalis, is the variety of the Spotted Coralroot that is distinguished by a rounded mid-lobe of the lip and an earlier bloom season than Corallorhiza maculata var. maculata.  In the areas where both grow together the bloom seasons overlap but this variety is always the first to be found in bloom.  It is quite variable in color and there are several named color forms including the form shown here which has brown stems.  It is quite distinctive when seen and the stem color is very different from the usual pinkish-tan color.  It is known as forma intermedia.
